I Deserve Better is the first presentation from Ron Winston Entertainment, LLC (RWE). It is a hard-hitting play that goes toe-to-toe with the raw realities of domestic violence. This play is presented in a passionate and realistic way, telling the story of a young lady named Keshia. During this glimpse into her life, the audience is exposed to the physical and emotional abuse she endures from her boyfriend Kevin. Audiences will experience her thoughts as she processes her rationale for staying with Kevin. They will ask themselves can she regain control of her life before Kevin destroys her?' Two other important elements of this production are: (1.) The affect on Keshia's loved ones knowing she's being abused, speaking out against it, and the horror of realizing their words are falling on deaf ears. (2.) Kevin confronting his father Carl, who use to abuse his mother when he was a child. Carl discovers his son is now "a chip-off-the-old block." He realizes that Kevin has become a product of the environment he was exposed to as a child. Kevin has become the monster Carl used to be. I Deserve Better will make you want to make a change in your life, home, and community.

The Genesis Of I Deserve Better |
The concept of I Deserve Better was conceived in 2001. Originally titled, What Kind of Love is This?, I Deserve Better has gone through many story developments over the years. After hearing numerous stories of first-hand experiences from women I've met, dated, worked with, befriended, interviewed and associated with, it was overwhelming to learn about the number of women who have been affected by domestic violence. Stories of being beaten, raped, and molested haunted my mind. Women abused by boyfriends, husbands, pastors, fathers, uncles, and cousins, disturbed my spirit and drove me to write. As I prepared to write and I researched the effects of being abused, I learned that abused women are left in a mental, physical, and physiological state of confusion and destruction. It was apparent that this was a bigger issue than I could have ever imagined. I became frustrated when I saw that very few people were willing to take a stand against abuse even in my own community and inner circle. I wanted to tell a story that focused on this horrible act. I wanted my characters to take a stand and stand firm. I wanted them to say that "This is wrong and we're not having it!" even if the person wasn't ready to hear it, accept it, or make a change. I also wanted to show what I believe women may be feeling or thinking. If I can connect with a woman's thought process, and she opens up long enough for me to say, "Hey, I understand how much you love that man, and he may love you too, but if this is how he treats you, then he is not worthy of your love, or your time, and it's time to go. So, if you want better, demand better because certainly YOU DESERVE BETTER," than I've made a difference.
"This production contains scenes of domestic violence. Our intent is to give a realistic presentation of this horrible act. Viewer discretion is advised. The purpose of this play is to entertain but more importantly to inform and inspire. Thank you for your support."
